Overview
Duqm sits on Oman's central Arabian Sea coast, a quiet stretch of empty beaches, wind-carved rock and a fast-growing port and free zone. For UK travellers it is an off-the-beaten-track alternative to Muscat and Salalah, well suited to a road trip, birdwatching or business linked to the special economic zone. There are no direct flights to Duqm from the UK, so nearly everyone routes through Muscat. Have a look at the price charts on this page before you book.
Best time to fly to Duqm
The comfortable season runs from October to March, with warm days, cooler evenings and calm seas, ideal for the coast and desert. April and May turn hot, and June to September are very hot, though airfares and hotel rates often ease. Use the When to book chart above to find the best-value weeks.
Airlines and routes
No scheduled international flights currently serve Duqm, so the usual approach is to fly the UK to Muscat, then take a short domestic flight or drive south. Oman Air and British Airways fly direct from London Heathrow to Muscat in around 7 hours 30 minutes. One-stop options via the Gulf include Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, Etihad via Abu Dhabi, Gulf Air via Bahrain and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, which are often cheaper from regional airports such as Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh. From Muscat, Oman Air and SalamAir operate the roughly 1 hour 15 minute hop to Duqm; the alternative is a scenic drive of about 550 km, or five to six hours.
Things to do in Duqm
Duqm rewards travellers who enjoy space, nature and geology.
- Duqm Rock Garden: A desert park of dramatic wind-eroded limestone formations, best at sunrise or sunset.
- Ras Madrakah: A headland south of town where black volcanic rock meets white sand and turquoise water.
- Barr Al Hikman: A vast tidal wetland north of Duqm and one of Arabia's most important sites for migratory wading birds.
- Al Nahdah Beach: Long, clean, near-empty sands for walking, swimming and picnics.
- Fish market and harbour: An early-morning glimpse of everyday coastal Oman.
At Duqm International Airport (DQM)
The terminal is small and modern, roughly 10 km from the town centre, about 15 to 20 minutes by road. There is no city bus, so plan ahead: arrange a hotel transfer, take a taxi and agree the fare first, or hire a car at the airport. With Duqm's sights spread out, a car gives you the most freedom.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Duqm
- Book the long-haul leg roughly 8 to 12 weeks ahead; last-minute Gulf fares are rarely kind.
- Fly midweek and avoid UK school holidays and the busy November to February weeks.
- Keep your dates flexible and use the price charts on this page to spot cheaper departures either side of your ideal day.
- Compare a direct Muscat service with a one-stop Gulf carrier, and price the Muscat to Duqm leg separately, as booking it alone can be cheaper.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders can currently enter Oman without a visa for stays of up to 14 days, provided they hold a confirmed hotel booking, onward travel and valid travel insurance; longer visits need an inexpensive e-visa arranged online before departure. Your passport should have at least six months' validity. The local currency is the Omani rial, one of the world's strongest at roughly £2, so budget with that in mind. No vaccinations are required for entry from the UK, but keep routine jabs up to date, drink bottled or filtered water, and take sun protection seriously all year.
