Overview
Chengdu, the relaxed capital of Sichuan province, is one of China's most rewarding city breaks — the home of the giant panda, some of the country's best food, and a famously unhurried teahouse culture. It is also a natural gateway to western China and Tibet. There are currently no scheduled non-stop flights from the UK, so most travellers reach Chengdu with one stop, and comparing routings is the key to a good fare. The price charts on this page show how live fares to Chengdu are moving right now.
Best time to fly to Chengdu
Chengdu sits in a humid basin and is often cloudy, so the weather rarely turns extreme. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October) are the most comfortable seasons, with mild days and less rain; autumn is usually the driest. Summers are warm, humid and wet, while winters are cool and grey rather than freezing. Fares climb around Chinese New Year (late January or February) and the early-October Golden Week, when domestic demand peaks. For the cheapest time to fly, see the When to book chart above.
Airlines and routes
Direct London–Chengdu services have operated in the past with carriers such as Air China and British Airways, and could return seasonally, but for now UK travellers generally connect through a hub. Common one-stop options include Air China, China Southern and China Eastern via Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou; Emirates via Dubai and Qatar Airways via Doha; Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong; and KLM, Lufthansa or Finnair via their European hubs. A non-stop flight would be around 11 hours; realistically, allow 14 to 18 hours from London depending on the connection, and a little longer from Manchester, Birmingham or Edinburgh.
Things to do in Chengdu
Chengdu rewards a slow pace — sightsee in the mornings and settle into a teahouse in the afternoons.
- Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding: see giant and red pandas up close; arrive early when they are most active.
- Wuhou Shrine and Jinli Ancient Street: a Three Kingdoms memorial temple beside a lively lane of snack stalls and craft shops.
- People's Park: join locals for tea, card games and "ear cleaning" at the open-air Heming Teahouse.
- Sichuan opera: an evening show built around the lightning-fast "face-changing" mask act.
- Leshan Giant Buddha: a colossal Tang-dynasty carved Buddha, an easy high-speed rail day trip south of the city.
At Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU)
Shuangliu lies about 16 km southwest of the city centre. Metro Line 10 runs directly from the terminals and links to the wider network within a couple of stops, making it the quickest and cheapest way in. Airport shuttle buses serve major districts and railway stations, and a taxi to the centre takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes outside rush hour. Note that Chengdu also has a newer airport, Tianfu (TFU), to the southeast — check which one your ticket uses.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Chengdu
- Book ahead: long-haul fares to China are usually best around three to five months before departure, and connecting seats around holidays sell out sooner than you would expect.
- Fly midweek and off-peak: Tuesday and Wednesday departures, and travel outside Chinese New Year and the first week of October, tend to be cheaper.
- Use flexible dates: shifting your trip by a few days often moves the fare, and the price charts on this page make the pattern easy to spot.
- Compare hubs: a Middle East or European connection can undercut a routing through mainland China, or the reverse, so check several carriers.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders can currently enter China visa-free for stays of up to 30 days for tourism, business or visiting family. This is a temporary arrangement that has been extended more than once, so always confirm the latest rules and check your passport validity with the Chinese Embassy before booking. The currency is the renminbi (yuan); mobile payments dominate, so set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a UK card before you travel and carry some cash as a backup. No special vaccinations are required for most travellers, but check the NHS Fit for Travel website for current advice.
