Overview
Dushanbe is the relaxed, tree-lined capital of Tajikistan and the usual starting point for trips into the Pamir mountains, the Fann Lakes and the wider Silk Road. It is small and walkable, built around Rudaki Avenue, with Persian-influenced culture and genuine hospitality. Many travellers pass straight through, but the city is worth a day or two.
Best time to fly to Dushanbe
Spring (April to early June) and autumn (September to October) are the sweet spots, with warm days, cool evenings and open mountain roads. Summer is hot and dry, often above 35°C, while winters are cold and snowy with the odd flight disruption. Fares tend to rise around the Navruz festival in March and over the summer holidays, so check the When to book chart above before you commit.

- Keep your dates flexible by a day or two either side, as the connecting flight can shift the fare noticeably.
- Compare hubs as well as airlines, since Istanbul and Dubai routings are often priced very differently for the same trip.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders can currently enter Tajikistan without a visa for stays of up to 30 days; an official e-visa covers longer trips and a separate GBAO permit is needed for the Pamir Highway. Check the latest gov.uk advice before booking. The currency is the Tajikistani somoni and the country is largely cash-based, so carry clean US dollars to exchange rather than relying on cards. No vaccinations are mandatory for most visitors, but see a travel clinic and drink bottled or boiled water.
