Overview
Chongju (also written Cheongju) is the capital of North Chungcheong Province and sits right in the heart of South Korea, roughly 110km south of Seoul. It is a relaxed, green city best known as the home of Jikji, the world's oldest surviving book printed with movable metal type. For UK travellers it makes a rewarding, crowd-free base for exploring central Korea. There are no direct flights to Chongju from the UK, so journeys route through Seoul or an Asian hub – see the airlines section below and the price charts on this page for current fares.
Best time to fly to Chongju
Korea has four distinct seasons. Autumn (late September to November) is the local favourite: dry, sunny days and vivid foliage around Daecheong Lake. Spring (April to May) brings mild weather and cherry blossom. Summer is hot and humid with a rainy spell in July and a small chance of a typhoon, while winter is cold and crisp with occasional snow. Fares tend to climb around blossom season and Korean holidays such as Chuseok and Lunar New Year – check the When to book chart above to spot cheaper windows.
Airlines and routes
No airline flies non-stop from the UK to Chongju. The most common option is a direct London Heathrow to Seoul Incheon service with Korean Air (around 11 hours), then an onward transfer. One-stop routings via the Middle East with Emirates, Qatar Airways or Etihad, or via a European or Asian hub, are often the best value and typically take 15 to 19 hours in total. From Seoul you can reach Chongju by KTX train (about 50 minutes to nearby Osong), airport bus or a short domestic connection. Some itineraries route through Chinese or Southeast Asian cities straight into Cheongju Airport on carriers such as Jeju Air or T'way Air.

Osong KTX station is a short drive away for fast trains to Seoul and Busan, and car hire desks are available in the terminal.
