Overview
Kisangani sits on a broad bend of the Congo River in north-east DR Congo, almost exactly on the equator and ringed by rainforest. Once called Stanleyville, it is the country's third-largest city and the highest point routinely reached by riverboat from Kinshasa. For UK travellers it is a genuinely remote destination, usually visited for work, NGO and mission projects, or ambitious river journeys. There are no direct flights from the UK, so every routing connects at least once. Use the price charts on this page to compare live fares.
Best time to fly to Kisangani
Kisangani has a hot, humid equatorial climate: roughly 30°C by day all year, with rain in most months. There is no true dry season, but travel is usually easier during the slightly drier spells from December to February and June to August. The wettest months are generally March to May and October to November. Airfares to the region tend to ease outside the European summer holidays and the Christmas peak, so check the When to book chart above for the cheaper travel windows.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct UK to Kisangani flights. The simplest option is Ethiopian Airlines from London Heathrow to Addis Ababa, about 7 to 8 hours, then a connecting flight on to Kisangani's Bangoka International Airport. Alternatively, fly to Kinshasa with Air France via Paris, Brussels Airlines via Brussels, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul or Kenya Airways via Nairobi, then continue on a domestic flight with a Congolese carrier such as Congo Airways. Including the connection and layover, expect a total journey of around 16 to 24 hours.
Things to do in Kisangani
Kisangani rewards curious travellers with river life, faded colonial architecture and the rainforest on its doorstep.
- Wagenia (Boyoma) Falls: powerful rapids where Wagenia fishermen still work giant wooden tripod traps by hand.
- The Congo River: take a pirogue or small-boat trip to watch ferries, dugouts and floating traders pass by.
- Cathedrale Notre-Dame du Tres-Saint-Rosaire: the city's landmark red-brick Catholic cathedral in the old town.
- Marche Central: the busy central market, the best place to feel the rhythm of everyday Kisangani.
- Tshopo Falls: a short drive away, a scenic cascade and small hydro dam on the Tshopo River.
At Bangoka International Airport (FKI)
Bangoka International Airport is about 17 km north-east of central Kisangani, a 30 to 45 minute drive on roads of mixed quality. It is small and facilities are limited, so carry small US dollar notes for any charges. There is no scheduled public transport: the safest choice is a pickup arranged in advance by your hotel, employer or tour operator, or a taxi at a fare agreed before you leave. Allow extra time during the rains.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Kisangani
- Book ahead: for a long-haul trip with connections, fares are usually best around two to five months before departure.
- Travel midweek and off-peak: avoid July, August and the festive season, and favour midweek departures.
- Keep dates flexible: moving your trip by a few days can noticeably cut the long-haul leg, so compare options on the price charts on this page.
- Weigh up hubs: compare an Addis Ababa connection against a Kinshasa routing, including the domestic add-on fare.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders need a visa for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, arranged before travel through the official DRC e-visa system or the embassy; your passport should have at least six months' validity. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is compulsory on arrival, and antimalarial tablets are strongly recommended. The currency is the Congolese franc, though clean US dollar notes are widely accepted: pounds are difficult to exchange, so bring dollars and do not rely on ATMs. Always check the latest FCDO travel advice for the DRC before booking and again before you fly.
