Overview
Honduras's capital sits in a bowl of pine-covered hills at around 1,000m, which keeps the climate pleasantly mild all year. It is a working city rather than a resort, but it rewards a day or two with a walkable colonial centre, good museums and cloud forest on its doorstep. There are no direct flights from the UK, so every itinerary involves at least one connection.
Best time to fly to Tegucigalpa
The dry season runs roughly from late November to April, with warm days, cooler evenings and the best conditions for hiking. May to October is greener but brings afternoon rain, and the Atlantic hurricane season (June to November) can occasionally disrupt travel. For lower fares, avoid Christmas, New Year and Semana Santa (Easter week); the shoulder months of May, June, September and October are usually cheaper for flights from London to Tegucigalpa — see the When to book chart above.
Airlines and routes
No carrier flies non-stop between the UK and Tegucigalpa. Most travellers connect through a US gateway such as Miami (American Airlines), Houston (United) or Atlanta (Delta), reached from London Heathrow or Manchester with British Airways, Virgin Atlantic or their partners. The final leg can also be flown with Avianca via San Salvador, Copa Airlines via Panama City, or Iberia via Madrid. Reckon on about 9–10 hours to a US hub plus 2.5–3 hours onward, and 16–20 hours in total including the layover; Manchester routings take a similar day, often via Atlanta or Madrid. If you transit the United States you must hold a valid ESTA, even just to change planes.
Things to do in Tegucigalpa
A few highlights worth your time:
- Basílica de Suyapa: Honduras's most revered church, housing the small statue of the Virgin of Suyapa, the nation's patron.
- Plaza Morazán and the cathedral: the heart of the old town, lined with 18th-century architecture and best seen on foot by day.
- Museo para la Identidad Nacional: a clear, well-presented run through Honduran history, including the Copán Maya site.
- La Tigra National Park: misty cloud forest with marked trails and excellent birdwatching, under an hour from the centre.
- El Picacho: hilltop park with a towering Christ statue and the best views over the city.
At Toncontín International Airport (TGU)
Toncontín lies about 6km (4 miles) south of the centre, typically 20–30 minutes by road. Use the official airport taxis or a pre-booked hotel transfer; Uber also operates in the city. Be aware that many international flights now use Palmerola International Airport (XPL) near Comayagua, about 80km (50 miles) north — roughly 1 to 1.5 hours away, with coach transfers into Tegucigalpa. Always check which airport is printed on your ticket.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Tegucigalpa
- Book around 2–5 months ahead; long-haul fares to Central America climb steeply in the final weeks.
- Fly midweek and steer clear of UK school holidays — the price charts on this page show the cheapest weeks.
- Stay flexible: moving your dates by a day or two, or flying into San Pedro Sula and continuing overland, can save money.
- Compare US-hub carriers against one-stop European routings, and price the whole journey rather than each leg.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days within the CA-4 area (Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua); carry a passport valid for at least six months. The currency is the Honduran lempira, with US dollars handy as a backup. No vaccinations are required unless you arrive from a yellow-fever country, but check NHS Fit for Travel and the latest FCDO advice before booking, as security guidance for parts of Honduras can change.
