Overview
Denmark's second city sits on the east coast of Jutland and makes an easy short-haul break from the UK. Aarhus is compact and walkable, with a medieval Latin Quarter, a reborn harbour district, a world-class art museum and a lively student-led food scene. It is well connected to the rest of Denmark by train, and searches for cheap flights to Aarhus tend to climb ahead of the mild summer months.
Best time to fly to Aarhus
Aarhus has a mild maritime climate. May to early September is the sweet spot: daytime highs of around 18-22°C, long light evenings and a busy festival programme. July and August are the warmest and most popular. Winter is cold and grey with short days and temperatures near freezing, though the Christmas period is atmospheric. Spring and autumn are quieter and often better value – check the When to book chart above to see how fares shift through the year.
Airlines and routes
Direct flights from the UK to Aarhus are limited and seasonal. Ryanair has operated London Stansted to Aarhus, with a flight time of about 1 hour 45 minutes; schedules vary by season, so check current availability. From Manchester and other regional airports there are usually no direct services – you would connect through a hub such as Amsterdam with KLM or Copenhagen with SAS, for a total journey of roughly 4½ to 6 hours. Many UK travellers instead fly to Billund or Copenhagen and continue to Aarhus overland.
Things to do in Aarhus
Most of the highlights are within walking distance or a short bus ride of the centre.
- ARoS Aarhus Art Museum: home to Olafur Eliasson's circular rooftop walkway with its full spectrum of coloured glass.
- Den Gamle By: an open-air museum of relocated historic buildings recreating Danish town life from the 1800s onward.
- Moesgaard Museum (MOMU): a dramatic grass-roofed museum of archaeology and anthropology, home to the Grauballe Man bog body.
- The Latin Quarter: the city's oldest streets, full of cobbles, independent shops and cafés.
- Marselisborg Palace: the royal family's summer residence, with open gardens and a nearby deer park.
At Aarhus Airport (AAR)
Aarhus Airport lies at Tirstrup, roughly 40km north-east of the city – further out than most European city airports. The Aarhus Airport Express coach (route 925X) is timed to flights and reaches the centre in about 45 minutes; taxis cover the distance but are costly. If you land at Billund, coaches reach Aarhus in around 1 hour 30 minutes, and direct trains from Copenhagen Airport take about 3 to 3½ hours.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Aarhus
- Book ahead for summer: fares for June to August are usually lowest a few months out – the price charts on this page show the current booking window.
- Fly midweek: Tuesday and Wednesday departures are typically cheaper than Friday or Sunday.
- Stay flexible: shifting your dates by a day or two, or travelling in the spring or autumn shoulder seasons, often trims the fare.
- Compare the whole journey: weigh a direct flight to Aarhus against flying to Billund or Copenhagen and connecting overland, as the total cost can be lower.
Travel essentials
Denmark is in the EU and the Schengen area. UK passport holders do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period; your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your departure date and issued within the last ten years. The currency is the Danish krone (DKK), not the euro, though cards and contactless payment are accepted almost everywhere. No vaccinations are required; carry a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) alongside travel insurance.
