Overview
Blantyre is Malawi's commercial hub and oldest town, spread over the green hills of the Shire Highlands in the south of the country. Named after the Scottish birthplace of David Livingstone, it is a relaxed, walkable city and the gateway to Mount Mulanje, the Zomba Plateau and the Lower Shire wildlife reserves. Most UK visitors pair a night or two here with Lake Malawi or a safari. There are no direct flights from the UK, so every routing involves one change.
Best time to fly to Blantyre
The dry season, roughly May to October, is generally the best time to visit: warm clear days, firm roads to Mulanje and Majete, and highland nights from June to August cool enough for a fleece. October turns hot and hazy before the rains. The wet season, November to April, brings afternoon storms, green landscapes and fewer visitors, though some dirt roads get tricky. UK school holidays in July, August and December push fares up, so check the When to book chart above before you fix your dates.
Airlines and routes
No airline flies non-stop from the UK to Blantyre. The common one-stop routes are Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa and Kenya Airways via Nairobi, both connecting from London and regional UK airports. Alternatively, fly to Johannesburg with British Airways or Virgin Atlantic and add Airlink's short hop to Blantyre. Expect around 15 to 20 hours in total depending on the connection, with the Addis Ababa and Nairobi routings usually the quickest.
Things to do in Blantyre
Give Blantyre a day or two before you head for the hills.
- Mount Mulanje: Southern Africa's highest massif, about 65km east, laced with hiking trails, forest huts and tea estates.
- Zomba Plateau: A forested tableland an hour north, with cool air, waterfalls and sweeping viewpoints.
- Museum of Malawi (Chichiri): The country's main museum, covering Malawian history, culture and the slave-trade era.
- Mandala House: Malawi's oldest building, dating from 1882, now home to a cafe, gallery and archive.

At Chileka International Airport (BLZ)
Chileka lies about 15km north of central Blantyre, a drive of 30 to 40 minutes through the suburbs. There is no airport train or dedicated bus, so most visitors use a pre-booked hotel transfer or an airport taxi; agree the fare in kwacha before you set off. Car hire is available at the terminal, though hiring a driver is the easier option for a first visit.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Blantyre

- Fly midweek and steer clear of the July, August and December peaks, as a Tuesday or Wednesday departure often beats the weekend.
- Keep your dates flexible and use the price charts on this page to find the cheaper weeks before you commit.
- Compare Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways and the Johannesburg routing side by side, weighing total journey time as well as the headline fare.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders can currently enter Malawi visa-free for short tourist stays, but entry rules have changed before, so confirm the latest advice on GOV.UK before you book. Your passport needs at least six months' validity and a blank page or two. The currency is the Malawian kwacha; larger hotels take cards, but carry cash elsewhere and bring US dollars rather than pounds to exchange. Malawi is a malaria area, so ask your GP or travel clinic about antimalarials; a yellow fever certificate is only required if you are arriving from a country where the disease occurs.
