Malawi, the "warm heart of Africa", is one of the continent's most welcoming and underrated destinations: the huge freshwater Lake Malawi fringed with beaches, plus a handful of quietly excellent national parks. It suits travellers who want wildlife, walking and lake time without the safari crowds. There are no direct flights from the UK, but well-timed connecting routes make it very reachable, and this page shows live fares so you can see current pricing at a glance.
The dry season, May to October, is the classic window — reliable sunshine, warm days, cooler highland nights and excellent game viewing as animals gather near water in Liwonde and Majete. June to August is the coolest and busiest stretch. The green season, November to April, brings afternoon rains, lush scenery, lower-season availability and superb birdlife. Lake Malawi stays warm year-round. Fares climb around the UK summer holidays and Christmas; the When to book chart above shows how prices move through the year.
Two airports handle nearly all international arrivals. Kamuzu International Airport (LLW), near the capital Lilongwe, is the main hub and the natural choice for central and northern Malawi and the northern lakeshore. Chileka International Airport (BLZ) at Blantyre, the southern commercial centre, is handier for Zomba, Mount Mulanje and the lower Shire parks. Both sit close to their cities — roughly 25 minutes from central Lilongwe and about 15km from Blantyre.
Every routing from the UK connects through one hub. Ethiopian Airlines flies via Addis Ababa, from London Heathrow and Manchester, to both Lilongwe and Blantyre. Kenya Airways connects through Nairobi, and Qatar Airways routes via Doha to Lilongwe from several UK airports. Connections via Johannesburg on Airlink are another option. Allow roughly 13 to 17 hours from London depending on the layover; journeys from Manchester are broadly similar via Addis Ababa or Doha.
UK passport holders need a visa. Most people apply online for the Malawi e-visa before travel; a visa on arrival is usually available at Kamuzu and Chileka airports. Your passport should be valid for at least six months with blank pages. The currency is the Malawian kwacha (MWK), and US dollars are handy for lodges and park fees. Antimalarial tablets are advised, and a yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from a country where the disease is a risk. Malawi runs one to two hours ahead of the UK. For the best fare, book ahead and check the When to book chart above.
Your allowance to Malawi depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
Indicative only. Allowances vary by airline, route and fare — always check your airline's baggage policy.
