Overview
Bauchi, capital of Bauchi State in north-eastern Nigeria, is the gateway to Yankari National Park and one of the country's most rewarding regions for wildlife and culture. There are no direct flights to Bauchi from the UK, so every trip connects through a Nigerian hub, but the route is well established and, with a little planning, straightforward. Have a look at the price charts on this page before you commit to a booking.
Best time to fly to Bauchi
Bauchi has a tropical savanna climate, with a dry season from roughly November to March and rains from about May to September. November to February is the most comfortable window for UK visitors: warm days, cool nights and prime game-viewing in Yankari, when animals gather around the waterholes. Expect dusty harmattan skies from late December into February. March to May is very hot, often above 38°C. The When to book chart above shows how fares shift across these seasons.
Airlines and routes
No airline flies direct from the UK to Bauchi. The usual approach is London to Abuja – British Airways operates a nonstop service from Heathrow of around six and a half hours – then onward to Bauchi. For lower fares, or from regional airports, one-stop routes run via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, Doha with Qatar Airways, Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines, or European hubs with Lufthansa, KLM or Air France, usually 10–13 hours in total to Abuja. From there, Nigerian carriers such as Overland Airways and Air Peace serve the region, though schedules to Bauchi's own airport are limited; many travellers take a road transfer from Abuja (four to five hours) or fly into Kano and drive on.

At Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport (BCU)
Bauchi's airport lies roughly 20 km from the city centre, a drive of about 30–40 minutes. The terminal is small with no public transport, so arrange your onward travel in advance: most hotels and tour operators can send a driver, and pre-booked car hire with a driver is the most reliable option for trips out to Yankari. Agree any local taxi fare before you set off.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Bauchi
- Book ahead: fares to Nigeria are usually keenest around two to five months before travel, especially for the December peak.
- Dodge the holidays: mid-December to early January is dear, while the shoulder weeks either side offer far better value.
- Fly midweek: Tuesday and Wednesday departures often undercut weekend ones.
- Compare hubs: weigh connecting fares via Istanbul, Doha or Addis Ababa against the BA nonstop to Abuja, and use the price charts on this page to time your booking.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders need a visa for Nigeria; apply in advance through the official e-Visa system and allow plenty of time. Travel with a passport valid for at least six months. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry and antimalarial medication is strongly advised – check NHS TravelHealthPro before you go. The currency is the Nigerian naira; exchange pounds in Abuja or Bauchi, carry cash for smaller purchases, and expect card acceptance to be limited outside major hotels.
