Overview
Victoria, on the island of Mahé, is one of the world's smallest capital cities and the gateway to the Seychelles archipelago. For UK travellers it's a long-haul tropical escape of granite peaks, powder-white sand and warm Indian Ocean water all year round. Every international flight lands at Seychelles International Airport (SEZ), just south of the city, so Victoria is where most Seychelles holidays begin.
Best time to fly to Victoria
Seychelles stays warm all year, typically 24–31°C. The southeast trade winds from around May to September bring cooler, drier, breezier days and livelier seas. The northwest monsoon from November to March is hotter and more humid, with the heaviest rain in December and January. April and October are calm transition months, prized for snorkelling and diving visibility. Demand and fares rise around Christmas, Easter and the European summer, so check the When to book chart above before fixing your dates.
Airlines and routes
There are currently no non-stop flights between the UK and Victoria. Most UK travellers connect through a single hub: Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, Etihad via Abu Dhabi or Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, with Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines routing via Nairobi and Addis Ababa. Air Seychelles operates and codeshares on many of the final legs. From London, allow around 13–15 hours in total for a one-stop itinerary, roughly 10 of them in the air. From Manchester, Qatar Airways via Doha and Emirates via Dubai give similar overall journey times.
Things to do in Victoria
Compact and walkable, Victoria is worth half a day on foot before you head for the beaches.
- Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market: a lively covered market for tropical fruit, fresh fish, vanilla and cinnamon.
- Victoria Clock Tower: the silver "Little Ben", modelled on the clock tower near London's Vauxhall Bridge.
- Mont Fleuri Botanical Gardens: century-old gardens with coco de mer palms and free-roaming giant tortoises.
- Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple: a vividly painted Hindu temple in the centre of town.
- Seychelles Natural History Museum: a quick primer on the islands' wildlife and Creole heritage.
At Seychelles International Airport (SEZ)
The airport sits on Mahé's east coast about 10km (6 miles) south of Victoria, usually 15–20 minutes by road. Metered taxis wait outside arrivals, most resorts arrange private transfers, and the public SPTC bus runs along the coast road into town. Car hire desks are in the terminal if you plan to explore Mahé independently.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Victoria
- Book roughly two to five months ahead; last-minute long-haul fares to Seychelles rarely drop.
- Travel in the shoulder months of May, June or October and avoid the mid-December to early-January peak.
- Keep your dates flexible and fly midweek, as a Tuesday or Wednesday departure often beats a weekend.
- Compare Gulf carriers against African hubs; the price charts on this page show how routings via Doha, Dubai and Addis Ababa compare.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders don't need a visa for tourism. You'll be issued a Visitor's Permit on arrival, initially for up to 30 days and extendable, but you must complete Seychelles' online Travel Authorisation and pay its fee before departure. Carry a passport valid for your stay, onward or return tickets and proof of accommodation. The currency is the Seychellois rupee (SCR), though cards are widely accepted in hotels and restaurants. No vaccinations are required unless you are arriving from a yellow fever risk country; check TravelHealthPro or NHS advice before you fly.
