Overview
Djerba is a sun-soaked island off Tunisia's southern coast, linked to the mainland by a Roman causeway and fringed with soft sandy beaches. It mixes whitewashed villages, palm groves, busy souks and one of North Africa's oldest Jewish communities. For UK travellers it makes an easy, good-value week in the sun, with warm seas lasting into autumn and a relaxed pace that suits families and couples alike.
Best time to fly to Djerba
The shoulder seasons — late April to June, and September to October — are ideal, with warm days, mild evenings and sea temperatures still pleasant for swimming. July and August are hot (often the mid-30s°C) and the busiest, so fares and hotels are at their peak; the When to book chart above shows how prices move through the year. Winter is mild and quiet, better for sightseeing than beach days. For summer travel, booking a few months ahead usually pays off.
Airlines and routes
TUI operates seasonal direct flights to Djerba from several UK airports, typically Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham, mainly from spring to autumn as part of package holidays. Direct flying time from London is around three hours. Outside the summer programme, or from other UK cities, you will usually connect — Tunisair and Nouvelair route through Tunis, while carriers such as Air France and Lufthansa connect via Paris or Frankfurt. Connecting journeys take roughly 6–10 hours depending on the layover.
Things to do in Djerba
The island is small enough to explore in a few days by hire car or on guided trips:
- Houmt Souk: The main town, with a maze of covered markets, cafés and the seafront fort of Borj El Kebir.
- El Ghriba Synagogue: One of the oldest synagogues in the world, in the village of Erriadh and the focus of an annual pilgrimage.
- Djerbahood: Erriadh's open-air street-art project, where artists from around the world have painted dozens of village walls.
- Guellala: A hillside pottery village with working workshops and a heritage museum covering island traditions.
- Flamingo Island (Ras Rmel): A sandspit reached by boat, known for its birdlife and shallow, calm water.
At Djerba–Zarzis International Airport (DJE)
The airport sits about 8km west of Houmt Souk and 20–30km from the beach resorts along the north-east coast. Most package holidays include a coach transfer. Taxis are inexpensive and metered — ask for the meter before you set off — taking around 15 minutes to Houmt Souk or 30–40 minutes to the Sidi Mahrez and Aghir hotel zone. There is no rail link, but car hire desks are in the terminal if you plan to tour the island.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Djerba
- Book summer trips roughly two to four months ahead; last-minute seats on seasonal routes are limited.
- Fly midweek and in the shoulder months of May, June and September for the best mix of weather and price.
- Keep your dates flexible and use the price charts on this page to spot the cheapest departures.
- Compare the direct TUI service against one-stop fares — connections can be cheaper if you do not mind a longer travel day.
Travel essentials
UK passport holders do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days; your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay. The currency is the Tunisian dinar, a closed currency you cannot buy in the UK — bring pounds or euros to exchange on arrival and change any surplus back before you fly home. Cards work in hotels, but carry cash for souks and taxis. No vaccinations are required for most travellers, though it is worth checking the NHS Fit for Travel site, and stick to bottled water. Always review the latest FCDO advice for Tunisia before you travel.
