Antofagasta is northern Chile's largest coastal city, spread along the Pacific where the Atacama Desert drops to the sea. It grew wealthy on nitrate and copper mining, and that history still shows in its port, its grand old buildings and the ornate clock tower on Plaza Colon, a gift from the local British community. For UK travellers it is usually a business trip, a mining-industry visit or a launch pad for the wider Atacama, and it makes a comfortable, sunny stop with reliably clear skies. If you are searching for cheap flights to Antofagasta, a little planning around the Chilean calendar goes a long way.
Antofagasta is one of the driest places on Earth, so the weather is mild and rain-free almost all year, with coastal cloud (the camanchaca) often burning off by midday. The Chilean summer, December to February, is the warmest and busiest, overlapping local holidays, so fares and hotels peak. April to June and September to November tend to offer the best value and still-pleasant temperatures. Check the When to book chart above for how prices are moving on your dates.
There are no direct flights from the UK to Antofagasta. Nearly everyone routes through Santiago (SCL). British Airways and LATAM fly London Heathrow to Santiago non-stop in around 14 to 15 hours; Iberia (via Madrid), Air France (via Paris) and KLM (via Amsterdam) are common one-stop alternatives. From Santiago, LATAM, JetSMART and Sky Airline operate the short hop to Antofagasta in roughly two hours. Allow around 20 to 26 hours door to door depending on your connection.
Most highlights sit on or just outside the city:
Cerro Moreno lies about 25 km north of the city, a 25 to 35 minute drive along the coast road. There is no direct city bus, so options are official airport taxis, pre-booked private transfers, shared minibus services and the usual car hire desks in the terminal. Agreeing the taxi fare or booking a transfer in advance avoids surprises late at night.
UK passport holders do not need a visa to visit Chile for tourism and can normally stay up to 90 days; you will be issued an electronic tourist card (Tarjeta Unica Migratoria) on arrival, so keep a copy. Your passport should be valid for the length of your stay. The currency is the Chilean peso (CLP) and pounds are not accepted, but cards are widely used and ATMs are easy to find. No vaccinations are required; Antofagasta itself is at sea level, though onward trips inland to San Pedro de Atacama reach high altitude. Local tap water is very high in minerals, so many visitors prefer bottled.
