Overview
Sayun (also spelled Seiyun) lies at the heart of Wadi Hadhramaut, the palm-filled valley of eastern Yemen, and is the gateway to the mudbrick cities of Shibam and Tarim. For UK travellers it is a long, multi-leg journey. The FCDO currently advises against all travel to Yemen, so standard travel insurance will not cover trips here and consular help is very limited. Most people flying to Sayun are visiting family or working with aid organisations, and this guide is written with those journeys in mind.
Best time to fly to Sayun
Hadhramaut has a hot desert climate. The most comfortable months are roughly November to February, with warm days and cool evenings. From April to September the valley is very hot, often above 40°C, and sudden summer downpours can trigger flash floods in the wadis. Aim for the cooler season for sightseeing, and check the When to book chart above before you commit to dates.
Airlines and routes
There are no direct flights between the UK and Sayun. The usual pattern is London to an intermediate hub, then Yemenia (Yemen Airways) onward to Seiyun Airport. Yemenia runs the main services into Sayun, most reliably from Cairo and Aden, with seasonal flights from Jeddah. A typical routing is Heathrow to Cairo (around 5 hours), then Yemenia to Seiyun (about 2 to 2.5 hours). Allow a full day of travel each way and build in a generous layover, as schedules can change at short notice.
Things to do in Sayun
Sayun is the base for exploring one of the most distinctive landscapes in Arabia.
- Seiyun Palace: The towering white former sultan's palace above the town, now a regional museum.
- Shibam: The UNESCO-listed "Manhattan of the Desert", a walled city of centuries-old mudbrick towers, about 20 km west.
- Tarim: A historic seat of Islamic scholarship, known for the Al-Muhdhar Mosque and its slender minaret.
- Wadi Dawan: A dramatic side valley of sheer cliffs and clifftop villages, famed across Yemen for its wild honey.
- Qabr Hud: A remote pilgrimage site linked to the Prophet Hud, busiest during the pilgrimage season.
At Seiyun Airport (GXF)
Seiyun Airport sits just a few kilometres from the city centre, so transfers take only 10 to 15 minutes by road. There is no rail or scheduled bus link; shared and private taxis meet flights, and the fare should be agreed before you set off. If someone is collecting you, arrange the pick-up in advance, as mobile coverage and card payment are unreliable.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Sayun
- Book early: seats on the limited Yemenia flights go quickly, and hub fares are usually lowest around two to three months ahead.
- Fly midweek and avoid school holidays and the pilgrimage season, when demand and prices rise.
- Keep your dates flexible and use the price charts on this page to spot cheaper departure days.
- Compare hub routings through Cairo, Amman or a Gulf city rather than assuming one is always cheapest.
Travel essentials
UK travellers need a visa to enter Yemen; in current conditions these are hard to obtain and usually arranged through a local sponsor or host organisation. Read the FCDO's Yemen pages carefully before making any plans. The currency is the Yemeni rial (YER) and this is a cash economy, so bring US dollars or pounds to exchange, as foreign cards and ATMs do not work. Keep routine vaccinations up to date, carry medicines in their original packaging, and note that medical facilities are very limited.
