Gwadar sits on the Arabian Sea coast of Balochistan, where the Makran shoreline meets deep blue water beneath a dramatic hammerhead peninsula. It is a place of working fishing harbours, wide empty beaches and big-sky sunsets, and it is developing quickly around its deep-water port. For UK travellers it is a genuinely off-the-beaten-track destination, best planned as part of a wider trip through southern Pakistan. There are no direct flights from the UK to Gwadar, so every itinerary involves a connection, almost always through Karachi.
The comfortable window runs from November to February, when days are warm (typically the mid-20s Celsius) and evenings are cool and pleasant. March and October are still manageable but noticeably hotter. Avoid May to September, when temperatures climb sharply and coastal humidity is high; the wider Arabian Sea can also see cyclone activity in early summer. Fares from the UK to Pakistan tend to peak around the summer holidays and the two Eids, so check the When to book chart above to see how prices shift across the year.
No airline flies direct from the UK to Gwadar. The usual approach is to fly to Karachi and connect onto a domestic flight. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flies from London Heathrow to Karachi, with a typical non-stop time of around eight and a half hours. One-stop options include Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, Etihad via Abu Dhabi, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul and Oman Air via Muscat; allow roughly 12 to 18 hours in total depending on the layover. From Karachi, PIA operates the short domestic hop to Gwadar in about 75 minutes. Some travellers instead drive the scenic Makran Coastal Highway from Karachi, which takes the best part of a day.
Gwadar rewards travellers who love raw coastal scenery and quiet beaches.
The new airport lies roughly 26 km north-east of the city centre, a drive of around 40 minutes. There is no established public transport, so arrange a taxi or a private transfer in advance through your hotel or travel agent. If you plan to continue along the coast, a pre-booked car with a driver is the most practical choice.
UK passport holders need a visa for Pakistan. Apply through the official Pakistan online visa system well before you travel and allow plenty of time. The currency is the Pakistani rupee; card acceptance is limited outside major cities, so carry some cash and change pounds at a bank or licensed exchange. Read the latest FCDO travel advice for Balochistan carefully before booking, as it can change and foreign visitors may need an official permit (a No Objection Certificate) to travel in the region. Check that your travel insurance covers everything you intend to do.
Your allowance to Gwadar depends on the airline and the fare you book. The table below shows typical long-haul allowances so you know roughly what to expect — always confirm the exact limits with your airline before you fly.
| Fare type | Hand baggage | Checked baggage |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / Light economy | 1 small under-seat bag | Usually none — add for a fee |
| Standard economy | 1 cabin bag + 1 personal item | Typically 1 × 23 kg |
| Premium economy | 1–2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 23 kg |
| Business / First | 2 cabin bags + personal item | Typically 2 × 32 kg |
Indicative only. Allowances vary by airline, route and fare — always check your airline's baggage policy.
